Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a proven technology that uses radio waves to identify individual items at specific locations.
A typical RFID solution consists of a data gatherer, RFID reader, and a data carrier (RFID tag) that is attached to an item or location
The RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) technology, enabling the remote identification and tracking of objects, is expected to gradually replace the barcode technology in automatic data capture applications, supply chain management, stock and inventory management and more.
The availability and performance of the technology enables the creation of new solutions and applications, which were not previously feasible, due to the limitations of barcode.
Following the worldwide trend, which was put into motion by Walmart, the US Department of Defense (DOD) and additional retailers in Europe (Metro, Tesco) – numerous evaluations, tests and pilots are currently being carried out with the goal of integrating RFID as a facilitator for technological progress, optimization of existing processes, as well as evaluation of new and novel applications.
Unlike ubiquitous UPC bar-code technology, RFID technology does not require contact or line of sight for communication. RFID data can be read through the human body, clothing and non-metallic materials.
RFID scanning can be done at greater distances than bar code scanning. High frequency RFID systems (850 MHz to 950 MHz and 2.4 GHz to 2.5 GHz) offer transmission ranges of more than 90 feet.
As part of the expansion of its business operations and in line with worldwide and local trends – LX Mobile has established an RFID solutions department.
The company has accumulated substantial knowledge and experience of integrating mobile and Auto ID computing solutions and wireless communications solutions in the enterprise, and has all the facilities, infrastructure and capabilities of extending these to include integration of RFID systems – which represent an additional means for automatic data collection alongside the barcode technology.
The current infrastructure in LX Mobile Systems for computing solutions for the mobile worker and supply chain management incorporates the following elements
-
Ruggedized and “soft” handheld computers, laptops and forklift computers with integrated barcode and RFID readers.
-
Fixed RFID readers and gates, RFID labels and tags, active and RFID products.
-
Mobile, desktop and enterprise printers for barcode and RFID.
-
Planning and building of wired and wireless networks (PAN, LAN, WLAN and WAN), access servers, management and interface to core enterprise computing systems.
-
Middleware for interfacing the Mobile / Barcode / RFID systems to core applications (ERP, CRM, WMS).
The company provides consulting services for the specification of customer requirements, design of solutions, top level and detailed design of the systems, supply of all the equipment and its installation, customization of the system, support of the users in initial deployment phases and service and support of the system over its life span.
LX Mobile represents several RFID equipment manufacturers, including Psion Teklogix, a Canadian manufacturer of handheld and forklift computers, who has integrated standard RFID readers and capabilities into its products (LF, HF and UHF EPC Gen 2). Psion Teklogix has implemented several international projects for RFID integration.
LX also represents MBBS, a Swiss RFID manufacturer, specializing in LF RFID solutions for metal/water environments and several additional companies providing HF RFID solutions and Active RFID solutions.
